Much More Than Beautiful Boats At The WoodenBoat Show

While there will be more than 150 incredibly beautiful wooden boats to view at the WoodenBoat Show set to take place at the Newport Yachting Center on August 25 to 27, 2006, there will also be many activities and amusements to entertain wooden boat enthusiasts of all ages.

CAPTAIN KIDS – Discovery Point

This very special exhibit is being brought to the show by Captain Kids, Inc, a national non profit educational organization. Onshore and onboard the sailing vessel SEAFLOWER, volunteers will offer several FREE interactive educational and fun maritime activities for children. The Theme of the 2006 Discovery Point Center is SPLASH In, On & Under the Water. All participants will receive a Free Membership in the Captain Kids Club and have a chance to go home with the most awesome tee shirt compliments of Interlux yacht paints.

Expert Demonstrations

Steam bending, plank spiling, spar making, and dove tailing are just a few of the skills that will be demonstrated by industry experts throughout the run of the show. Instructors and students of Newport’s International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) are among those who will take the mystery out of some critical skills that are essential to building and maintaining wooden boats. Jasper & Bailey Sailmakers will introduce sailors to the proper care and maintenance of sails as well as teach how to make emergency onboard repairs. All demonstrations are free to show attendees.

Exhibitor Workshops

Several show exhibitors will present half-hour hands-on workshops representing the proper use of their products and services. FeatherBow® is the newest feather board woodworking tool for the professional craftsman or woodworking enthusiast. This remarkable instrument works with an existing table saw or router table to stabilize and guide precious wood while being cut. Marcel W. Coderre of Mystic Works will demonstrate this revolutionary product. Crystalac Company will cover the many advantages of using Crab Coat marine finishes and promise that a live musical production performed by their technical staff will keep the audience laughing. Chesapeake Light Craft president and stitch-and-glue expert John C. Harris will demonstrate how to design and build beautiful wood-epoxy elements such as hatches, consoles, coolers, and deck structures. Jim Cassidy of Heritage Marine Insurance will explain what to look for in a good woodenboat policy and more during his workshop titled “Understanding Insurance for Wooden Boats.” Many other workshops will be offered free to show attendees.

Let’s Go Shopping

On shore exhibits and displays will include a plethora of shopping opportunities. Classic Meissner Winches will be available from R&W Enterprises suppliers and consultants to both Pirates of the Caribbean movies. For these movies R&W supplied hundreds of wooden deadeyes, miles of rope for both the sets, and refits of the sailing ships Providence and Bounty. Anyone seeking original nautical paintings for their home or yacht should visit Linda Norton’s booth where she will be showing her new series, “From the Deck Of” that features lively action aboard wooden boats. J.P. Uranker, a woodcarver from Martha’s Vineyard produces authentic handmade maritime reproductions of sea chests and ditty boxes. His meticulous attention to detail assures the owner that considerable time and effort have gone into building the chest before the hand carving takes place. If a genuine Venetian water taxi is on your wish list, you’re in luck, as La Gondola is bringing a 30-foot long solid mahogany version built in Jacksonville, Florida from components made in Venice, Italy. If something smaller and less expensive suits your fancy, Sail Classics offers beautifully finished ship models of many famous sailing yachts. A complete line of nautical clocks, barometers and tide time clocks in solid brass and chrome will be exhibited by the Whale’s Tale.

Educational Opportunities

Have a hankering to learn about building or restoring wooden boats? Such venerable institutions as the WoodenBoat School, the International Yacht Restoration School, the Philadelphia Wooden Boat Factory, the Landing School and the Apprenticeshop will offer a profusion of academic options.

Take to the Seas

Set sail, row, paddle, or power one or several of the small craft that will be available for free trial runs. High performance and recreational kayaks and canoes plus rowboats, skiffs, dinghies and other assorted vessels will be available from such exhibitors as Chesapeake Light Craft, Pulsifer, and Six River Marine.

Win a Custom Wooden Canoe

Show goers can support the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) by purchasing raffle tickets for a chance to win a cedar strip canoe custom built by Marty Wieszczecinski of the Whiskey River Boatshop. All (100%) of the proceeds will go to the charity. The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary health agency — a dedicated partnership between scientists and concerned citizens aimed at conquering neuromuscular diseases that affect more than a million Americans. The raffle winner’s name will be drawn on August 31.
