Don’t Miss This Year’s Show – Just a Few Highlights Appear Below!

Board Philadelphia’s tall ship Gazela

The 177-foot barkentine, Gazela, was built in the shipyard of J. M. Mendes in Setubal, Portugal. Her records, as she now stands, date from 1901 but there is good evidence that many of the timbers used in her construction are from the ship Gazella (spelled with two Ls) that was built in 1883. She is now owned, maintained, and operated by the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild with the help of donors and volunteers.

Power-up with Pulsifer & Six River Marine

Dick Pulsifer builds the Pulsifer Hampton using the traditional strip planking method. These wooden boats are constructed of native white pine, oak, and cedar, hand selected and sawn to my specifications. Having built nearly one hundred of these handsome vessels, the methods, materials, and equipment are much the same as those he has used for thirty years. Although, Dick says, “with each Hampton I build, I am continually adding details, developing techniques, and making improvements.”

The classic lines of the West Pointer (available in 18', 20' and 22' versions) by Six River Marine of North Yarmouth, Maine, are derived from sea-tested Maine skiffs. These designs have been plying the coast as work and pleasure boats since the beginning of the 20th century. The hull is pleasing to the eye and seaworthy.

Study student restoration work

Philadelphia Wooden Boat Factory was contracted to complete the restoration of a Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 15 built in 1916. Their advanced boat building class replaced deck beams, constructed a new plywood deck with douglas fir covering boards, installed canvas on the deck and constructed floor supports for the cockpit sole. Completed boat will be launched this spring.

Enjoy family fun

Onshore and onboard the sailing vessel SEAFLOWER, Captain Kids’ Discovery Point brings a several fun water related activities plus demonstrations and special presentations on subjects from maritime history, water conservation, fishing, and exploring the creatures that live in oceans, lakes, rivers and streams.
